Background

Studies in recent years suggest that eating an adequate amount of fruit can reduce the risk of heart diseases, stroke and certain kinds of cancer. Therefore, the Department of Health recommends teenagers above 12 years old and adults to have two servings of fruit every day.

Objectives of the Secondary School Fruit Promotion Project

To effectively promote fruit eating to secondary school students, the Department of Health initiates the "Creative Fruity Venture – Secondary Schools Fruit Promotion Project". The project aims to encourage students to design and hold school-based activities on fruit promotion under teachers' supervision. The school can organize one or more activities on fruit promotion on any designated date(s) within the period from January to March of 2011. Activity/activities may take various forms depending on the school setting and support. Examples of these programmes include poster design, slogan creation, promotion of fruit containing dishes at Home Economics Lessons, cheerleading competition, or even running fruit business within schools or at the lunar new year fair. The aim of this project is to promote the fruit consumption of all students and teachers.

School Healthy Eating Promotion Fund

A School Healthy Eating Promotion Fund is established by the Hong Kong College of Cardiology to support the "Creative Fruity Venture – Secondary School Fruit Promotion Project". It aims to provide incentives to secondary schools in organizing effective school projects on promoting fruit consumption among all teachers and students and thus improving heart health for them.
