Background

According to the World Health Organization, adequate fruit and vegetables intake can reduce the risk of developing heart diseases, stroke and certain cancers. However, an earlier local survey showed that just over half of primary school students had the habit of consuming enough fruit regularly. As such, the Department of Health (DH) organised the annual "Joyful Fruit Day" event since the school year 2006/07 to promote daily fruit eating habit in schools. In the school year 2012/13, the event was upgraded from "Joyful Fruit Day" to "Joyful Fruit Month" and the whole month of April was designated as "Joyful Fruit Month" since then.

Co-organisers and Supporters

The event is co-organised by DH, Education Bureau, Committee on Home-School Co-operation, Hong Kong Education City and Hong Kong College of Cardiology, and supported by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, Jump Rope for Heart Program, Radio Television Hong Kong Radio 1, World Cancer Research Fund Hong Kong and Federations of Parent-Teacher Associations in all districts in Hong Kong.

Purpose and Theme

"Joyful Fruit Month" aims to create a favourable environment in which student are encouraged to eat an adequate amount of fruit every day through home-school cooperation. All schools are encouraged to systematically organise year-round activities to boost students' interest in fruit eating. It is hoped that the fruit eating spirit within schools will be lifted to an unprecedented level throughout the "Joyful Fruit Month" in April. The slogan-cum-theme for "Joyful Fruit Month 2018" is “Fruit - Nutritious and Cool!”.
