Background
According to the World Health Organization, adequate fruit and vegetables intake can reduce the risk of developing heart diseases, stroke and certain cancers. As such, the Department of Health (DH) launched the annual "Joyful Fruit Day" event in the 2006/07 school year to promote the daily habit of eating fruit among students. In the 2012/13 school year, the event was upgraded to become the "Joyful Fruit Month". Since then, April is designated as the "Joyful Fruit Month" every year.
Organiser and Co-organisers
The "Joyful Fruit Month" is organised by the DH and co-organised by the Education Bureau, Committee on Home-School Co-operation, Hong Kong Education City and Hong Kong College of Cardiology. The event is also supported by the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department, Jump Rope for Heart Program, Radio Television Hong Kong Radio 1 and Federations of Parent-Teacher Associations in all districts in Hong Kong.
Purpose and Theme
Through home-school co-operation, the "Joyful Fruit Month" aims to create a favourable environment in which students are encouraged to eat an adequate amount of fruit every day. All schools are encouraged to systematically organise year-round fruit promotion activities to boost students' interest in eating fruit, and to lift the atmosphere of eating fruit to a climax throughout the "Joyful Fruit Month" in April. This school year's "Joyful Fruit Month" event will take place in April 2025. The theme cum slogan of "Two Servings of Fruit, Your Health, Your Say" to promote the message that daily fruit intake is essential for good health.
